Beyond the Line Where the Sky Meets the Sea

When it comes to maritime education, we often find ourselves battling against stubborn stereotypes. People tend to see us as nothing more than skilled drivers navigating the vast ocean or folks stuck in a never-ending cycle of scraping rust off ship hulls. But let me tell you, our recent triumphs at the UC Days 2024 with the theme “UniverCity: Championing Through Fortifying Unity and Camaraderie” have shattered those narrow perceptions. As maritime students, we are here to prove that we are so much more—we are the embodiment of potential and limitless ambition.
As maritime students, we are born voyagers, wayfinders, not just of water but of knowledge. We set out on a mission to redefine what it means to study maritime. Are our paths predetermined, only revealing themselves when we become professionals? Or can we chart our own course, even as students, and explore uncharted depths of knowledge and achievement?
In this trail, I am delighted to introduce our exceptional students, Mr. Angelo S. Cuevas and Ms. Allyana Jelaine S. Pineda from the Senior High School Department and Jian Dominique Esdrelon, a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering student and Mr. Joselito M. Demante, a Marine Transportation student, both represent the College Department of UC-METC. Ms. Allyana Jelaine S. Pineda won as Second Runner-Up and as Miss Congeniality while Mr. Angelo S. Cuevas snatched the First Runner-Up Award. Whereas Jian Dominique Esdrelon emerged as Miss Congeniality as well. These remarkable individuals have proudly represented our maritime institution as the Faces of UC.
In the recently concluded event, a variety of competitions showcased the talents and skills of the participants. Among them, the ultimate victory went to D/C Andre Louise Emmanuel Jaboneta from the BSMT program, who claimed the championship in the Extemporaneous category.
D/C Kean John Carreon, a third-year BSMT student, secured the first runner-up position in the General Information segment, while D/C Parhyss Nathan Baclay, also from BSMT, impressed the judges and earned the first runner-up title in Declamation. D/C John Vincent Lao's artistic abilities in poster-making landed him the first runner-up spot.
E/C Skid Britz C. Rosatace's captivating performance secured the second runner-up position in Spoken Word Poetry. The energetic Pahugyaw Dance and the talented Serapio Dance Fleet both claimed commendable second runner-up positions. The Science Bee witnessed exceptional performances from D/C Ezra Joseph Batuigas, E/C Sam Cogollodo, and King Jos Rydan Relatorres, who collectively secured the second runner-up position. In the Math Quiz Bee, D/C Shaquille Jose M. Daffon, E/C Carlo Rodrigo A. Acebo, and Nathan Cole A. Retardo showcased their mathematical prowess to clinch the second runner-up title. The BSNAME and BSMT students gave a mesmerizing performance in the Speech Choir category, earning them the second runner-up position.
Finally, the Spelling Bee saw D/C Shaquille Jose M. Daffon and D/C Shania Famor, both BSMT students, secured the third runner-up title and D/C Kent Dominique Fernandez represented UC-EDTALKS and achieve the third runner-up position.
These triumphs are not just mere achievements; they are an attestation to our refusal to be confined by society's expectations. We are explorers, innovators, and dream-chasers, breaking free from the shackles of convention to forge our own paths. These victories at UC Days signify our collective determination to redefine the narrative surrounding maritime education.
Join us on an extraordinary voyage, where maritime students embark on a transformative journey. As we set sail, dreams come alive, and the horizon, and together, we push the boundaries of what is possible. This remarkable adventure awaits, and we warmly invite you to be a part of the heart and soul of UC's remarkable maritime legacy!
