Happy National Women’s Month to all mothers, wives, girlfriends, and… vessels?

Women embody strength in myriad forms. They are the calm waters that soothe troubled souls of children, or even adults, and the unyielding rocks that provide stability in turbulent times. In our own homes, women are the backbone of families and communities. They provide care, support, and nurturing to their families and are essential to the development of children. Women also play a significant role in community building and often take on leadership roles in community organizations. Regardless whether ‘she’ is meant to lead a family, or fated to hustle and slay on her own, women will always be the captains of their own destinies, steering their lives with courage and determination. Like a ship's hull, they carry the weight of responsibilities with grace and resilience.

In the context of the maritime field, a lot of people wonder why ships are often referred to using feminine pronouns, a tradition, as old as time, that likely roots from historical naming practices and cultural perceptions. Historically, ships were commonly named after women, including goddesses, mythological figures, and important historical or religious women. This likely contributed to the use of feminine pronouns to refer to ships. Additionally, ships are often seen as providing protection and sustenance to their crew, similar to the nurturing role of a mother, which may have further solidified the association with femininity. Moreover, another reason for referring to ships with feminine pronouns could be their perceived beauty and grace. Some people view ships as elegant and graceful, much like how some might describe a woman. This association with beauty and grace could have led to the use of feminine pronouns in reference to ships. And though these are theories that have navigated across lands and waters, the practice of using feminine pronouns for ships likely developed over time due to a combination of multiple wholesome reasons.

Nonetheless, regardless of the real reason as to why she’s referred to as a “she”, it has never been a debate that women have brought forth a vast amount of inspiration not just in the seafaring context, but in every aspect the universe has. Women have provided several gifts in this world, including birth and life itself. As we welcome the month of March, 2024, the significance of celebrating the annual National Women’s Month along it has never been less evident and crucial, and it’s a must for us to remember and honor the persons who have shed light to a more beautiful and worth-living life.
