Does Time Management Really Exist?

It’s a rhetorical question that, though it presents a clear ‘yes’ answer, is still a thought worth pondering about. Student leaders and individuals who immerse themselves in school organizations have never been strangers to this contemplation.

When we speak of time management, it’s akin to discussing a quite popular person. In Filipino superstitions, if it were alive, it would have surely bitten its tongue multiple times by now. In the annals of history, the concept of time management traces back to ancient timekeeping in Egypt and Greece. Regardless of its origins, it’s a human instinct that surfaces the moment one is under pressure. And we are talking about the pressure faced by student leaders—juggling the responsibilities of academics and the demands of extracurricular activities is what these organization enthusiasts do best. They attempt to complete both assignments and project proposals simultaneously.

However, time management is not just a phrase we use to fool ourselves. It is actually a systematic process that should be taken seriously and executed thoughtfully. Balancing the responsibilities of being a student and a leader is a task that requires an actual and concrete plan, not just a series of thought bubbles. The emergence of new and innovative technologies like electronic calendars has paved the way to solving these problems. Listing tasks on electronic calendars can improve time management by providing organization, scheduling, notifications, accessibility, and integration with other tools. Research published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that using electronic calendars helped participants better manage their time and tasks compared to paper calendars.

Now, back to the question: Does time management really exist? Well, it’s no longer rhetorical but rather a question that has an answer dependent on one’s actions. It could be an actual system or merely a concept we constantly feed not only ourselves but also the people around us. As we welcome the new set of officers for both the Student Body Organizations and the Council of Maritime Leaders, may they also take into account that the greatest service they could ever give is their time, and it is something that should be carefully managed.
